Create Badges - 25% Off

Today until 11:59pm PST, you can create your very own widget badge for 25% off! That means for regular members, it only costs 75,000 credits and 67,500 credits if you have a VIP membership.

As taken from the Sales Page and then edited by me:

The price of badges is relatively high to help make badges special, collectible, and valuable. When you get a badge, you know it was created by someone who really loves IMVU, and who wanted you to have something special to show off in your profile [or because they caved into peer pressure and wanted a shiny like everyone else].

Here are the steps required to create your own custom badge.
  1. Decide your badge size
  2. Create your image (JPG, BMP, and PNG file formats are supported) [And here is where I interject and tell you to create the badge as a GIF and upload it as a GIF because that is the ONLY format it actually supports since the badges are converted to that format after upload. You'll get some pretty yucky graphics that way so just make it a GIF first!]
  3. Import your image
  4. Cry over the amount of money you just spent on a pixelated picture.

There are two three methods to give badges to your friends.
  1. Manually give the badge to your friend
    a. Click on "Manage Badges" in your account settings page
    b. Click on "Grant/Revoke" Option
    c. Type in avatar name that you and hit the "Grant Button"
  2. Automatically give badges to profile page visitors who requests them.
    a. Click on "Manage Badges" in your account accounts page
    b. Click on the "Edit Settings"
    c. Click on the "Badges Auto Grant" box
    d. If you want to restrict who can get your badges, use the Panel Visibility Settings
on your account settings page to choose a sub-set of visitors, e.g. your buddy
  3. Use an automatic badge script. Several people offer one. Just browse around the forums for it.

The badge wasn't invited to steal from anyone. It's a credit sink. It was designed to get rid of a large amount of credits at a fast pace in order to keep our virtual economy steady. There are far too many credits in the system right now and when there are too many, the value of them drop.

This can be both good and bad. In a way, it's good for those buying credits - they cost less to purchase. But on the other hand it really puts the developers in a bad place. It means they get less when they sell credits - which in turn makes many drive up the prices of their products. So in the end... not a win for the consumers.

It's simple economics. IMVU creates A LOT of credits and dumps them into the economy with the credits they give away in Promo bundles not to mention their actual credit sales (if you can believe noobs still buy those ridiculously priced stuff lol). Widget Badges are just a good (and fun) way of removing those excess credits.

Someone was trying to decide on whether or not a badge would be 'worth it' to them and I gave them a few thoughts to consider:

1) Is the Real Life monetary conversion worth it to you?

What is your priority when it comes to the $34ish dollars the 75K credits will equate to?

Can you afford to let that go right now?

Is the potential marketing value of the badge worth it?

2) Can you make that 20 x 20 square look like something that is representative of your style?

If someone sees your badge, will they go, "Oh hey, it's ABC Dev!"

3) Will you be happy with your purchase?

Most important question of all, in my opinion. :)

For myself, I just bought mine and I've hemmed and hawed over it for months since they first came out.

I had some credits hoarded away and had a badge already made that I liked and so decided that even IF the marketing aspect didn't go as crazy as it did before, I would still be happy with my purchase and that was when I purchased my badge.

It helps the economy like you said and it IS still a pretty major sale even if it isn't the 50% off.

:)

I think one of the biggest issues people run into when it comes to badges is that they get lost in the hype and lose focus on the actual importance, need, and want for the badge for themselves and that is when the whole 'OMG I shouldn't have done that!/Why did I ever do that for?!' comes into play.

By the by, nice blog! :)
